How to Change the Name of a Verified App
Eligible verified app owners can change an app’s name, and its bot’s username, directly in the Developer Portal.
Before You Start
- New names must comply with Discord’s policies. Before choosing a new name, review Discord’s Developer Policy.
- The app name and the bot username each have their own 180-day cooldown. Changing one does not affect when you can change the other, unless you change both at once.
- The Developer Portal shows the next date on which each can be changed again.
⚠️ Important: Review the proposed names carefully before confirming. A successful change takes effect immediately and starts the 180-day cooldown for each name you changed.
Change Your Verified App’s Name
- In the Developer Portal, select the verified app you want to rename.
- Under the General Information section, edit the app name to enter the new name.
- (Optional) To give your bot the same name, select Also update the bot username. The confirmation modal shows the exact bot username that will be used.
- Review the confirmation modal. It shows the current name, the proposed new name, the 180-day cooldown, and a reminder that the name must follow Discord’s policies.
-
Click Confirm Change to complete the change. If accepted, the new name or names take effect immediately.
If you leave the option unselected, only the app name changes and your bot keeps its current username.
Change Your Bot’s Username Only
You can also change your bot’s username without changing the app name.
- In the Developer Portal, select your verified app.
- Open the Bot section.
- Edit the bot’s username.
- Review the confirmation modal (new username, 180-day cooldown, policy notice) and confirm.
This starts only the bot username’s 180-day cooldown. Your app name and its cooldown are not affected.
Name Requirements
App names and bot usernames must follow Discord’s Developer Policy and other applicable policies. Names can be rejected if they are misleading, impersonate Discord or another entity, infringe intellectual property, contain prohibited content, or otherwise violate Discord’s rules.
Bot usernames also follow Discord’s username rules. They are limited to 32 characters, must be available, and cannot contain certain reserved words.
If you believe a name was rejected by mistake, review Discord’s Developer Policy and contact Developer Support.
What Happens After the Change?
- The new name updates immediately.
- A 180-day cooldown begins for each name you changed.
- The Developer Portal displays when each name can be changed again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often can I change my verified app’s name or bot username?
Each can be changed once every 180 days. The two cooldowns are tracked separately, so changing your bot username does not delay an app name change, and the other way around.
Why don’t I have the option to change the name?
The app name or bot username may also be within its 180-day cooldown, or the app may be otherwise ineligible for the self-service flow.
Why was the new name rejected?
The proposed name may not comply with Discord’s policies, or the bot username may already be taken or break username rules. Review the Developer Policy and try a compliant name. If you believe the rejection was a mistake, contact Developer Support.
Will changing the app name also change my bot’s username?
Only if you select Also update the bot username on the General Information page, under Name. Otherwise, your bot keeps its current username. You can also change the bot’s username separately under the Bot section.
Why doesn’t my bot’s proposed username exactly match my new app name?
Bot usernames follow stricter rules than app names. Some characters or words may be removed, and names longer than 32 characters are shortened. The confirmation modal always shows the exact username before you confirm.
What if the bot username changes but the app name doesn’t?
When you update both at once, the bot username is changed first. If the bot username is accepted but the app name is then rejected, the bot username change stays in effect and its cooldown begins. Your app name and its cooldown remain unchanged, so you can try a different app name.
What if I change a name by mistake?
Review the names carefully before confirming. A successful change takes effect immediately and starts its 180-day cooldown. The self-service flow does not provide an immediate undo option. Contact Developer Support if you need assistance.
Are team members notified when a team-owned app is renamed?
Discord doesn't send team members a notification when a name changes. We recommend letting your team know.
When does the new name take effect?
New names takes effect immediately after the change is successfully confirmed.
