This guide covers the process of changing names for both verified and unverified Discord bots. Note that your bot has two names: the application name and the bot username.
For Unverified Bots
If your bot is unverified, changing its names is a straightforward process:
Access the Discord Developer Portal
- Navigate to the Discord Developer Portal
- Click on the Applications submenu
- You will see a list of your applications
- Select the application you wish to rename
Update Names
Application Name
- In the "General Information" submenu
- Look for the "NAME" entry field near the top
- Enter your desired new application name
- Save your changes
Bot Username
- Navigate to the "Bot" submenu
- Look for the "USERNAME" field
- Enter your desired new bot username
- Save your changes
The application name is what appears in the Developer Portal and OAuth2 prompts, while the bot username is what users see in Discord servers and chats.
For Verified Bots
Once your bot becomes verified, the name change process becomes much more restricted:
- Name changes (both application and bot username) are only permitted in specific circumstances
- A legal copyright claim or DMCA takedown notice from a company regarding your application's name is required
- This restriction exists to prevent verified bots from impersonating other popular applications through post-verification name changes
Remember that these restrictions only apply after verification. If you're still in the development phase with an unverified bot, you can freely change both names using the process described in the unverified section above.
If your Verified Bot meets the above criteria, reach out the Developer Support team here. Don’t forget to provide helpful information, such as App ID and current Name along with new name and reason for the change.
